Editing a wiki is pretty easy, there is a simple mark up process. Our wiki is using the same software as wikipedia so the directions for editing there are the same as for us. We do limit editing to members, so start off by signing up.

The Big Ideas

Anyone can edit a wiki! ( on this wiki you need to sign up ). But how do you do it. If your are allowed to edit then an edit tab appears at the top of the page. Click it and another view of the page appears with a window full of plain text for the page and in this window you can type what you want. When you are done you can click at the bottom of the page to save your changes, or cancel them.

Wikis use the idea of markup. So what is markup. The system takes pretty much plain text, no special fonts, no special layout and arranges it on a page with special fonts and formatting. How is this done? Some of the plain text is read by the wiki engine as instructions to the engine about the formatting. Lets give some examples.

This section of this page is titled "The Big Ideas" how did that get to be a section with a section heading? What I wrote in the wiki editor was:

= The Big Ideas =

To make a sub section under a section use two equal signs:

Subsection

The text for this subsection is:

== Subsection ==

Some Common Markup

  • Blank lines

These are easy, use some blank lines:

  • Bullet Lists

Each item is listed on a line like this:

* Bullet Lists
  • Link to another page in the wiki

Put the name of the page in double square brackets: A Course On Python

[[A Course On Python]]
  • Link to page off the wiki

Put the url of the page in single square brackets, then a space, then the name you want used for the link: Learn Python the Hard Way - Read for Free
